About Miep Gies
Miep Gies is best known for hiding Anne Frank and her family in Amsterdam during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands. Along with her husband, Jan Gies, and a few others, she provided a secret annex in the back of her workplace to shelter the Frank family and four other Jewish people from the Nazis.
After the Nazis arrested the residents of the secret annex, Miep bravely collected and hid Anne Frank's diary and other personal writings, saving them from being lost forever. After the war, she gave the diary to Anne's father, Otto Frank, who later published it as The Diary of a Young Girl.
Miep and her colleagues risked their lives by helping hide Jewish families from the Nazis. The consequences of being caught would have been severe, yet they chose to do what was right and resisted the oppressive regime.
Miep Gies received numerous awards and honors for her heroic actions, including the Yad Vashem Righteous Among the Nations medal, an award presented to non-Jews who risked their lives to save Jews during the Holocaust.
Throughout her life, Miep remained modest about her actions during the war. She often downplayed her heroism, stating that she did what anyone would do in the same situation. Despite this, her courage and compassion continue to inspire generations.
After the war, Miep continued to work with Otto Frank and the Anne Frank Foundation, striving to spread Anne's story and promote tolerance and understanding. She also spoke about her experiences to educate future generations about the Holocaust and the importance of standing up against injustice.
Miep Gies is portrayed in various books, documentaries, and movies that recount the story of Anne Frank and the hidden annex. Her character serves as a symbol of hope and resistance in the face of adversity.
Miep Gies passed away on January 11, 2010, at the age of 100, but her legacy as a courageous and compassionate individual continues to live on.
