New Album Feature: Tales of Bittersweet Romance - Budgee's 'Pell-Mell'

The resulting pain and reflection of lost love has generated some of the best art of all time. Both museums and the Billboard charts are filled with emotional gems that are globally relatable.

UK Folk duo Budgee explore themes of enduring loss and healing a broken heart in their five-song EP "Pell-Mell." Celine Brooks’ confessional vocal delivery reads like a sequential diary entry in the early days of a break-up. The lead off song “Pell Mell” feels like a comforting yet uneasy Americana soundscape with Gareth Dickson’s gentle finger-picked guitars and haunting strings. The lyrics state:

How do I begin

When everything I try to say is cheapening

What will I do now

If every role I try to play is weak

“Pell-Mell” is a Folk Americana masterpiece which weaves ambient slide guitars, strings, and light percussion with songs that are both poignant and starkly honest. It’s easy to get lost in the soft landscape of acoustic sounds that can dually sit in the background or sit in front and center of a scene.

The final song on the EP, Keep You in Mind, ties up the overall message of the album with these lyrics of gentle resignation:

Just to keep you in mind

There’s too much that I let go

Though I can say

I tried
